Recycling money from phishing: Scammers need you! - 2006/02/05 20:27
There are letters circulating that might apparently seem legitimate and attractive work offers. They actually hide the "recycling" of money stolen from bank accounts cracked by "phishing". Basically it works as follows:
- Scammer gets bank account sensitive info (username-password) by phishing techniques
- Scammer tranfers money from the cracked bank account to the account of the person 'hired' through letters like the one below. This person will be most often honest and unaware of illegal nature of the operation. This person thinks he is involved in a legitimate money transfer. We will refer to this person as honest victim number 2.
- Honest victim number 2 then transfers the recieved funds, tipically by Western Union, to the scammer, in a remote country (russia-ukraina), while keeping an agreed percentage for himself as payment for the transaction (5-20% depending on the cases). The use of Western Union in practice makes the scammer untracable.
On the contrary, honest victim number 2 (could be you if you reply to e-mails such as the one below) will be easily identified and will go through a lot of troubles.
